ROCKINGHAM — A Mecklenburg County man suspected of breaking into vehicles is also accused of threatening to kill Richmond County sheriff’s deputies.
According to warrants, 29-year-old James Dink Mayo, of Charlotte, broke into a 2006 Jeep Liberty and 2006 Hyundai Elantra on July 18.
Mayo allegedly pulled away from Deputy M. Norris, who was investigating the break-ins.
He reportedly directed a threat toward Norris when he said that he would “shoot every deputy out there in the head when I get out and and I’m coming for you first.”
Warrants allege that Mayo also failed to follow the commands of Deputy Keith Smith who was trying to place him in the Richmond County Jail. Mayo also allegedly attempted to push the deputy.
Mayo is charged with two felony counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle; two misdemeanor counts of resisting a public officer; and one misdemeanor count each of assault on a government official or employee and communicating threats.
He was booked under a $25,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 6.
Mayo was given a court-appointed attorney.
Court documents show that authorities were unable to verify Mayo’s address as he had recently been released from prison in South Carolina.
The RO could find no criminal records for Mayo in the counties bordering North Carolina. South Carolina’s public records search requires checking records for each individual county, unlike North Carolina’s consolidated court and prison records.
Online records with the North Carolina Court System and N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show no other pending charges or previous convictions in the state for Mayo.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
