Man killed in wreck outside Hamlet

HAMLET — One man was killed and another severely injured last Wednesday in a one-vehicle crash on N.C. 177.

According to the N.C. State Highway Patrol, 21-year-old Eddison Herrera of Hamlet was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer north on N.C. 177 when he ran off the road to the left, overcorrected and flipped.

The incident happened just before 3 p.m.

Herrera was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for treatment of severe injuries, troopers say.

One passenger, 21-year-old Mario Ramirez of Hamlet, died at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond. Troopers say he was not wearing a seat belt.

A second passenger, 21-year-old Carlos Martinez survived. According to the Hamlet Fire Department, he was treated and released.

Troopers say no drugs or alcohol are suspected at this time.

The Highway Patrol is consulting with the district attorney’s office and no determination on charges has yet been made.
