Man wanted for attempted murder in Scotland County arrested by Hamlet Police at City Lake

HAMLET — Police arrested a man on Thursday wanted in Scotland County for throwing an explosive device into a home two years ago.

According to the Hamlet Police Department, City Manager Jonathan Blanton, who was at City Lake overseeing renovations, called in to report a man with an open container of alcohol, which is prohibited at the park.

Sgt. Greg Stone, Cpl. Charles Talley and Detective Corey Wilson responded and began questioning 30-year-old Ad Mcrae IV, of Laurel Hill.

McRae gave officers the false name “Alfonso McRae” and told them his date of birth was a year later than what it is, according to a warrant.

While McRae was being questioned, an off-duty deputy with the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office, Lt. Alford, drove by and recognized McRae, according to the HPD. Alford told the officers McRae’s name and that there were outstanding warrants for his arrest.

According to those warrants, issued Aug. 30, 2018, McRae through a Molotov cocktail into an occupied home on March 1, 2017.

For that incident, he is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, possession of a weapon of mass destruction, and damage of an occupied property with an explosive. All of those charges are felonies.

Hamlet Police charged him with a misdemeanor count of resisting a public officer.

McRae was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $2 million secured bond for the Scotland County charges and a $1,500 secured bond for the HPD charge.

He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 22 on the Richmond County charge and Aug. 28 on the Scotland County charges, online court records show.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety show an Ad McRae IV with a birth date one month prior to the one listed on McRae’s warrants.

McRae was convicted in 2006 of communicating threats and disorderly conduct. His probation was revoked the following year when he was convicted of another count of communicating threats. He spent less than two months behind bars, records show.

He was also convicted in 2008 of misdemeanor larceny and was placed on probation.
