ROCKINGHAM — Just one week after hosting hard rock and heavy metal fans for the inaugural Epicenter Festival, Rockingham Dragway is preparing for a group of maniacs.

The Rugged Maniac returns to the Rock on Saturday for its spring event in North Carolina.

“Rugged Maniac is like recess for grown-ups, except our playground has a three-story water slide, trampolines, and a fire jump, and there’s a huge festival right in the middle of everything with a DJ and plenty of beer!” reads a description on the event’s website.

Five thousand people are expected to attend the festival and mud run. Aside from the 3.1-mile obstacle course, the event will also feature mechanical bulls, dance-offs and a pie-eating contest, according to the website.

Two hundred maniacs per time slot will run, jump climb and crawl through the challenging obstacle course.

The course features 25 obstacles, five of which are new: Feed the Beast; Hell and High Water; Slippery Slope; Barzan; and Iron Curtain.

Registration, which ends at midnight Thursday, includes a T-shirt, racer medal, free photos and one free beer.

For those who aren’t up to the challenge and want to just watch, admission is free.

Rugged Maniac has already held similar events in South Carolina and Virginia in recent weeks.
