HAMLET — Dr. Jeff Maples has been chosen to temporarily take the helm of the Richmond County school district until a permanent replacement for Dr. Cindy Goodman can be found.
The appointment as interim superintendent was announced Monday afternoon during a celebration for Goodman’s retirement at the Cole Auditorium.
Maples currently serves as associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
“Dr. Maples is part of the team,” Wiley Mabe, chairman of the Richmond County Board of Education, said about the short-term pick. “He knows all the employees. This is a seamless transition. Everyone I have spoken with about the board’s decision is in approval.”
Goodman announced her retirement to the school board last month after more than 30 years in public education. She was hired as superintendent in 2014 after serving several months as interim superintendent.
The Richmond Observer will have more on Goodman’s retirement on Tuesday.
