ROCKINGHAM — Big wheels will be rolling in the frontstretch infield this weekend as Monster Truckz returns to Rockingham Speedway.

The first of the trucks preparing for the three-day event arrived at the historic track at 4 a.m. Monday, according to speedway Vice President of Operations Justin Jones.

“The track had barely cooled down from Seat Time Racing,” Jones added, referencing the driving school’s first date at the speedway for 2022 on Sunday.

Another preparation includes spreading 600 yards of clay along the frontstretch infield between the oval track and pit road wall, which has already been done, according to Jones. Ramps were being set up Thursday afternoon.

Monster Truckz is bringing its Extreme Tour which boasts an adrenaline-filled show with not only the trucks, but also Extreme Rock Crawlers, its Nitro Motocross team, and a human cannonball.

The show has been heavily marketed, both on social media and around the county, with posters hanging in store windows and free tickets for kids — with one adult admission — being made available.

A promotional poster on the Monster Truckz Facebook page shows that Larry Quick, driver of Ghost Ryder, and Shannon Quick, driver of Girl Power, are both slated to return. Both drivers were in Rockingham last July for the Monster Truckz Mayhem Tour, which also featured a stunt driver.

Five other trucks are listed for the event including: Avalanche, with driver Rob Poutre; Dysfunctional, with driver Vern House; and Wild One, with driver Derek Nelson.

A pit party will be open to all ticket holders, which includes a meet and greet with the drivers, a ride in one of the trucks and more. The pit party begins two hours before showtime.

Monster Truckz has four shows scheduled: 7 p.m. Friday; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday; and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The shows will go on rain or shine.

The National Weather Service is calling for a 70-100% chance on Friday night, and an 80% chance of showers early on Saturday — with wind gusts up to 38 mph — before clearing for the night with temperatures dropping into the low 20s. Sunday is expected to be clear with a high of 52.

Jones said the only thing that will cancel a show is lightning. In that case, a rain date will be announced. He added that because of expected rain, tickets are redeemable for all shows.

The speedway posted a FAQ on its Facebook page Thursday afternoon, noting that this is a licensed event and the speedway is not responsible for pricing or operations.

It also states that coolers are not permitted.

A note on the Monster Truckz website says parking fees may apply.

Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate the day of the event.

After the show in Rockingham, Monster Truckz moves on to Wilson and then Fayetteville. The Mayhem Tour, which runs simultaneously, will be in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, this weekend.

This will be the first of more than 30 events scheduled for Rockingham Speedway in 2022, following last weekend’s open house.

Motorsport 4the Masses will be at the Little Rock March 19 for its high-performance driver education course and will hold the first short track test and tune for the CARBS Tour on March 20. The Classic American Racing Barnstormer Series was showcased at the open house and will hold its first event, featuring a variety of vintage stock cars, the weekend of April 23.

MB Drift also returns the first weekend in April for its Spring Matsuri, the first of six events scheduled for the season.

Other April events include a Tarheel Sports Car Club autocross event at the Little Rock on April 10 and the Zerbini Family Circus on Thursday, April 21.
