ROCKINGHAM — More than 50 more residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since last week.

In its daily update, the Richmond County Health Department reported 52 new cases on Monday. That number includes all new cases since Friday’s update. The department also reported 16 new cases on Friday, making 68 in the past four days.

At least five of the new patients are students.

The Richmond County Board of Education reported Monday there were three traditional students (L.J. Bell, Monroe Avenue and Washington Street) and two virtual students (Richmond Early College High School and Richmond Senior) who have tested positive since the weekend.

The uptick in new cases coincides with the state setting yet another record-high day on Nov. 14 with 3,885, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

The previous record was set Nov. 11 with 3,119 — the first time more than 3,000 cases were reported in a single day. DHHS reported 3,117 on Sunday, with the total dipping to 1,972 on Monday.

Richmond County currently has 157 active coronavirus cases, with 151 under home isolation and six hospitalized. Statewide hospitalizations have been above 1,400 since Nov. 12, according to DHHS.

According to FirstHealth, 35 of its 359 patients have COVID-19.

Of the 52,362 tests completed by the hospital system, 5,418 have been positive, 46,142 have been negative and 222 results are still pending.

On the county level, there have been 15,825 negative results, and 1,653 positive results. The Health Department says 1,458 of those have recovered and 38 have died from COVID-related complications.

There have been 204 new cases reported for the month of November.

North Carolina has had 314,207 total cases (276,132 presumed to have recovered) and 4,814 deaths.

Free testing COVID testing began last week in the parking lot behind the Human Services Complex on Caroline Street. Testing will run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday through the rest of the month, except for Thanksgiving Day and the day after, according to a press release.
