National Weather Service: 70 mph wind gusts possible

ROCKINGHAM — Strong thunderstorms moving through the area could bring wind gusts as high as 70 mph on Thursday.

The National Weather Service has not yet issued any watches or warnings for the area, but a hazardous weather outlook calls for the possibility of strong scattered storms across central North Carolina which could include frequent lightning strikes, golf-ball-sized hail and damaging straightline winds with gusts of 60-70 mph.

The winds could break limbs or blow down trees, damaging power lines and other property.

Heavy rains which could lead to localized flooding and ponding on the roads is also possible, along with the chance for isolated tornadoes.
