MEDIA ADVISORY: NCDP Press Conference Asks, “Was North Carolina the Testing Ground for Russian Meddling in Future Elections?”

NC GOP Employment of Data Firm with Russian Connections that Used Stolen Personal Data to Influence North Carolina Voters Raises Serious Questions

RALEIGH – Following new reports that Sen. Tillis, the NC GOP, and Rep. McHenry employed the shady Republican data firm Cambridge Analytica, which lied about its ties to the Russian government and stole Facebook users’ personal information to target American voters, the North Carolina Democratic Party (NCDP) is holding a press conference to ask: was North Carolina the testing group for Russian interference in future elections?

With the national spotlight on Cambridge Analytica intensifying, its ties to North Carolina Republicans run deep. In 2014, the Tillis campaign paid Cambridge Analytica $30,000 and the NCGOP paid them $150,000, per the Federal Elections Commission. Congressman Patrick McHenry’s campaign also paid the firm $15,000 in 2014. NCGOP spent another $65,000 with the firm in 2015. Cambridge Analytica began harvesting Facebook data under false pretenses just one month before the NCGOP’s first payment to the firm.

The new reports raise several important questions about Sen. Tillis and the NC GOP’s employment of the shady data firm. Reporters outside of Raleigh can dial-in at (605) 472-5453; 654189.
