ROCKINGHAM — There are currently nine roads closed in Richmond County in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Some of the roads could be open as early as this week, while others may take a month or two to repair.
Derby Road is closed due to flooding between McBride Road and Sycamore Lane north of Hoffman. DOT officials expect it to be open again by Sept. 27.
Little Road, which leads to Foxfire, is reported to be closed near U.S. 1 because of flooding and is scheduled to reopen Sept. 26.
In the northwest area of the county, Holly Grove Church Road and Grassy Island Road are both closed, the former because of a pipe washout near Cartledge Creek Road, the latter because of flooding. According the DOT, it should reopen by Halloween.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office also provided photos showing piles of logs, resembling beaver dams, crossing the road. Traffic should be flowing by Oct. 18.
Just north of Rockingham, Nicholson Road is impassable from Northam Road to Pinecroft Street and is also expected to open on Oct. 31.
The remaining four roads are on the southern end of the county, three of them off of U.S. 1.
Sandhill Road is blocked just south of Loch Haven Road because of a pipe failure and is hoped to be fixed by Nov. 18.
Osborne Road is closed due to a pipe failure and, closer to the state line, Everetts Mill Road is washed out. Both are scheduled to be fixed by Nov. 19.
About 9 miles east, Airport Road is closed south of Hamlet between Osborne-Ghio Road and Douglas Road and is expected to reopen Friday.
Blewett Falls Road was flooded earlier this week but was reopened on Wednesday, according to the sheriff’s office.
Neighboring counties fared much worse. As of Thursday afternoon, there were more than 25 roads closed in each Anson and Scotland Counties and 14 closures in Moore County.
