EAST ROCKINGHAM – At 10:10 p.m. Friday night, a call went out to Richmond County first responders that a pedestrian had been struck in front of the Village Mart on Airport Road.

Upon arrival units discovered that the male subject was in the store at the time of the accident. Authorities confirmed that a vehicle had driven through the front doors of the store and struck the individual who was just inside the entrance to the store.

Responding to the incident were East Rockingham Fire Department, First Health Richmond EMS and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

The vehicle then left the scene in an unknown direction. The patient was transported by First Health Richmond EMS to the hospital and then air lifted to another hospital by helicopter where his condition had improved enough to be released from the hospital.

Deputies with the Sheriff’s Office were searching for the vehicle at press time. The incident is still under investigation by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
