Person of interest cleared, suspect still sought in Hamlet attempted abduction

HAMLET — Police are still on the hunt for a man accused of trying to take a child from a local park Monday evening.

According to the Hamlet Police Department, officers responded to a call of an attempted abduction of a young girl at Memorial Park, speaking with both the victim and her parents.

“The suspect was last seen walking into the wooded area between Memorial Park and Tall Pines Apartments,” reads a post on the department’s Facebook page. “Officers canvassed the area in an attempt to locate the suspect, but were unsuccessful. A K-9 Unit from the Rockingham Police Department was called in for assistance to track the suspect, but was also unsuccessful in locating the suspect.”

Police had initially included a photo of a person of interest from surveillance video with the post Monday night.

However, investigators say they spoke with the man Tuesday morning and were able to rule him out as a suspect. His photo was subsequently removed.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police say the suspect is a black man who was wearing black pants, a black hoodie and black gloves.

Any witnesses or anyone else with information on the case is encouraged to call the Hamlet Police Department at 910-582-2551.
