ROCKINGHAM — A longtime educator was honored this weekend at the inaugural Richmond County PowWow.

Jim “Two Fox” Chavis was presented a proclamation and key to the city from Rockingham Mayor John Hutchinson during the event at the Leak-Wall House on Nov. 4.

According to the proclamation, Chavis began his educational career in his home county of Robeson before joining the staff of Richmond Community College, where he taught for three decades and later became vice president.

Chavis formed a Native American dance group in the 1950s and traveled across the state introducing the indigenous culture “to a young generation,” according to the proclamation.

He also “became a historical expert on North Carolina Native Americans representing Richmond, Scotland, and Robeson Counties and Lumbee Tribe with Honor.”

The powwow featured traditional dances and information on regional Native American tribes like the Lumbee and Tuscarora.

November has been recognized as National American Indian Heritage Month (or Native American Heritage Month) since 1990.
