ROCKINGHAM — More than 2,000 “Maniacs” made their way through a 3.1-mile obstacle course at Rockingham Dragway on Saturday.

The return of Rugged Maniac drew participants from hundreds of miles away, including a group from the Vanceboro Police Department, to test their endurance.

The first hurdle — after running to it — was to jump the wall, traverse the dragstrip and clear the other wall before running up the far end of the concrete stands.

Clearing the Roll Call, the “Maniacs” ran through a wooded trail and mud before reaching another obstacle and heading back into the woods at the end of the track.

Other challenges along the course had participants climbing nets, crawling through mud, zip-lining across water, and jumping over burning logs before running up the warped wall and splashing down just before the finish line.

Rugged Maniac returns to North Carolina Oct. 21 for a run at Piedmont Dragway.
