Local veterans were honored with the annual service at Richmond County Veterans Memorial Park late Saturday morning.
The annual event is a cooperative effort of the county’s veterans groups, including American Legion Post 147, VFW Post 4203 and AMVETS Post 316.
Cadets from the Richmond Senior High School Army JROTC Raider Battalion also played a huge part by raising the flags and carrying wreaths during the traditional laying ceremony.
There were also Veterans day proclamations read aloud by Rockingham Mayor John Hutchinson, Hamlet Mayor Amy Guinn and County Commissioner Robin Roberts.
Guest speaker for this year was Monica Lockwood, chaplain of the American Legion Department of North Carolina. Lockwood, of Cherryville, served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966-68 and has been active with the American Legion since 1997.
There will be another service at 3 p.m. Monday at Norman’s Field of Honor.
