WASHINGTON – In an effort to restore law and order, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) today voted to withhold certain federal grants from sanctuary cities, allow sanctuary cities to be sued by crime victims, and increase penalties for deported felons who illegally return to the United States.
“America is a nation of laws, and we function best when those laws are applied fairly and equally. How anyone could think it a good idea to release a criminal alien into a neighborhood, presumably to make a political point at the expense of citizens, is beyond me,” said Congressman Pittenger. “We must restore accountability.”
The No Sanctuary for Criminals Act (H.R. 3003):
· Withholds certain federal grants from jurisdictions that prohibit local officers from cooperating with ICE.
· Allows victims of certain crimes to sue sanctuary cities.
· Ensures illegal immigrants who are convicted of drunk driving are detained during their removal proceedings.
Kate’s Law (H.R. 3004) enhances penalties for deported felons who return to the United States without permission.
H.R. 3003 today passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 228-195. H.R. 3004 passed by a vote of 257-167.
“Sanctuary cities put local residents at risk, forcing police to look the other way and allowing dangerous criminals to go free. This is madness, not compassion. If this law had been in effect in 2015, San Francisco would potentially be liable for the murder of Kate Steinle. We are restoring law and order,” said Congressman Pittenger.
