Police: Officers catch 2 in the act stealing from Hamlet Hardware

Cody Mabe, left, and Terry Poplin are accused of stealing a lawnmower from Hamlet Hardware early Thursday morning.

HAMLET — Police say they caught two men red-handed stealing from a local hardware store in the early morning hours.

Two officers with the Hamlet Police Department, Sgt. Grantland Jackson and Officer Kevin Viana, responded to an alarm call at Hamlet Hardware around 4:16 a.m. Thursday.

According to Capt. Randy Dover, Jackson went to the front door and Viana went to the back.

When he got around the corner, Viana reportedly saw two suspects carrying out a box containing a Yard Machine push lawn mower, valued at $200.

Dover said the owner was called to verify the lawnmower was merchandise from the store.

The officers arrested 23-year-old Terry Michael Poplin of Wilmington Street and 22-year-old Cody Tyler Mabe of Whistle Street. The two were each charged with breaking or entering and larceny, both felonies.

They were booked into the Richmond County Jail, each under a $5,000 secured bond and are scheduled to appear in court Sept. 26.

Online court records show Poplin has pending charges from the N.C. State Highway Patrol of driving with a revoked license; operating a vehicle with no insurance; having a fictitious or altered title, registration card or tag; and giving, lending or borrowing a license plate.

His court date on those infractions is Sept. 18.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show neither has any prior convictions.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
