Dr. John S. Stevenson of Rockingham is the newest member of Richmond Community College’s Board of Trustees.

HAMLET – Newly appointed Richmond Community College Board of Trustee Dr. John S. Stevenson of Rockingham attended his first board meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 1.

The long-time doctor of radiology was appointed to the board by Gov. Roy Cooper for a four-year term.

“What a privilege it is to be asked to be a part of such an amazing educational institution as Richmond Community College,” Stevenson said. “I look forward to seeing what great educational opportunities come in the future, working with such an amazing staff, and I hope to be around in this life long enough to connect with even a small portion that Richmond Community College has to offer.”

Stevenson has an extensive resume in medicine, including serving as Department of Radiology chairman for First Health Richmond Memorial Hospital from 1972 to 2007, chairman of the First Health Richmond Memorial Hospital Board from 2003 to 2004 and member of the First Health of The Carolinas Board from 2002 to 2011. The medical staff of Richmond Memorial Hospital named Stevenson Physician of the Year in 2005 and 2007.

His career also includes a stint in the United States Air Force as the chairman of the Department of Nuclear Medical Research at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute in Bethesda, Md., and medical staff member of the Bethesda Naval National Medical Center.

He was also chairman of the board and organizing member of the Longleaf Community Bank, and a past chair of the Richmond County Four Oaks Bank Branch local advisory board. He also held a leadership role in the establishment of Mallard Lane Center for Handicap and Behavior Disabled Children.

A graduate of Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Science in biology, Stevenson graduated from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1967 and completed his residency in 1972. He began working in Richmond County in 1972 with Sandhill Radiology Associates, and in 2007, he retired from Charlotte Radiology after a 35-year career.

Stevenson has dedicated many years of service to his community. He has served as a leader for numerous boards and committees spanning healthcare, education, banking, the arts and government. His service and leadership has not gone unnoticed, and he has received many awards and honors.

The City of Rockingham presented him with the Community Service Award for his work on the Land Use Planning Committee from 1998 to 2007. The Richmond County Chamber of Commerce named him Citizen of the Year in 2007, and the City of Rockingham passed a proclamation for Sept. 13, 2007, to be known as Dr. Stevenson Day.

In 2013, Stevenson received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, which is the highest civilian award conferred by the governor of North Carolina.
