Richmond County announces 62nd COVID-related death

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Health Department on Tuesday announced the ninth COVID-related death for 2021.

A press release from the Health Department doesn’t say when the resident died, just that the death occurred in a hospital outside the county.

Forty-four of the county’s 62 COVID-related deaths have been in a hospital, while 14 have been at a healthcare facility and four have been outside of a health setting.

Last week, the Health Department reported two deaths on Jan. 13, one on Jan. 14 and three on Jan. 15 and one on Jan. 16. There was also one reported Jan. 8.

October has had the most deaths with 15, followed by 13 in December.

The race and gender breakdown is as follows: 11 African American females, eight African American males, one “other race” female, one “other race,” male, one Hispanic female, two American Indian males, 20 Caucasian females and 18 Caucasian males.

All patients have been between the ages of 31 and 95: 19 have been 80 or older; 19 have been in their 70s; 17 in their 60s; six in their 50s; and one who was 31.

As of Jan. 17, there had been 8,083 COVID-related deaths statewide, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. DHHS did not report any numbers on Monday and Tuesday numbers were not available at the time of this writing.

Johns Hopkins University reports (as of 11:13 a.m. Jan. 19) there have been 399,111 COVID-related deaths in the U.S. and 2,044,445 globally, with the 2 million mark being surpassed on Friday afternoon.

FirstHealth and the Health Department announced earlier Tuesday that residents 65 and older can now receive the vaccine with an appointment.

On Monday, 24 Richmond County residents were hospitalized with the coronavirus.
