ROCKINGHAM — Dr. Tommy Jarrell was recognized Tuesday by the Richmond County Chamber of Commerce for three decades of service as health director.

Chamber President Emily Tucker presented Jarrell with a plaque of appreciation during the Richmond County Board of Commissioners meeting.

Jarrell recently retired after serving in the position since 1991, walking out of the office for the last time Thursday, May 27.

He had planned to retire last year, but decided to stay on board during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“He could have went on to retirement and left us — but he didn’t, thank goodness, because I needed him the most in my years as Chamber president,” Tucker said, fighting back tears.

“I’d like to thank the Chamber and the commissioners for all the support I’ve received through the years, as well as all the county managers I’ve worked with, department heads and most of all the great staff of the health department — and Social Services and Aging Services,” Jarrell said, with a round of applause.

“We appreciate you and what you’ve done for this county,” Chairman Jeff Smart told Jarrell.
