Richmond County collecting hazardous household waste Saturday

ROCKINGHAM — Need to get rid of paint cans, fluorescent lights or batteries?

Richmond County will be collecting hazardous household waste and pesticides Saturday in the Human Services Complex parking lot on Caroline Street from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Public Works Director Jerry Austin said they won’t be taking electronics, but those things found under the kitchen sink and in the shed.

Residents are encouraged to bring items that aren’t accepted at the landfill or convenience sites including:

Advertisements
  • Latex and oil-based paints and paint-related materials
  • Solvents and degreasers
  • Aerosols
  • Household cleaners
  • Pool chemicals
  • Acids
  • Batteries (alkaline, lead acid, re-chargeable)
  • Fluorescent lights and light ballasts
  • Propane cylinders
  • Thermostats and metallic mercury

The event is sponsored by the county government, the N.C. Cooperative Extension and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

County records show that 3.5-6 tons of hazardous waste are collected each year.

The event was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
