Richmond County coronavirus case count exceeds 150; about one-third have recovered

ROCKINGHAM — While the number of positive COVID-19 cases in Richmond County continues to rise, so does the number of recoveries.

In the past five days, the Richmond County Health Department has reported 20 new cases  —  three on Friday, 10 on Saturday, three on Monday and four on Tuesday.

That brings the county’s total to 152 in less than two months since the first case was reported in early April.

On the flip-side, a total of 58 patients are considered to be recovered, making for 94 active cases.

The Health Department reports that four patients are currently hospitalized and 88 are under home isolation.

The number of children (under the age of 18) to test positive has risen to 15. However, that age group has the lowest number of patients.

Numbers for the other age groups (which includes recoveries) are as follows: 25 aged 19-30; 18 aged 31-40; 31 aged 41-50; 38 aged 51-64; and 25 aged 65 or older.

The number of cases per ZIP code are as follows:

  • Rockingham – 99 (35 recoveries)
  • Hamlet – 45 (20 recoveries)
  • Ellerbe – 7 (two recoveries)
  • Hoffman – 1 (recovered)*

(*Last week, the Health Department reported two total cases in Hoffman with one recovered.)

Of all the tests performed, the results of 962 have been negative.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services has had a lower number of total cases than the Moore County Health Department for several weeks.

While the state shows only 141, the Moore County Health Department is reporting 198. However, Moore County does not show the number of recoveries.

DHHS reports that 24,140, or 6.85%, of the 352,331 residents tested within the past two months have been positive. There are currently 621 North Carolinans hospitalized due to the coronavirus.

Half of North Carolinas counties have had fewer than 100 cases.

Five counties, including four of the most populated, have had more than 1,000 cases each: Mecklenburg, Wake, Durham, Guilford and Wayne.

Mecklenburg has had a total of 3,403 to test positive for COVID-19, the most in the state.

There have been 766 deaths, including two in Richmond County and 10 in Moore County, attributed to the coronavirus.

The number of cases in surrounding counties, according to DHHS, are as follows:

  • Union – 406
  • Anson – 61
  • Stanly – 53
  • Montgomery – 88
  • Hoke – 201
  • Scotland – 67
  • Robeson – 674

Both Stanly and Montgomery counties have seen 20 new cases since last Wednesday.

As of May 25, DHHS estimates that 14,954 patients in the Tar Heel State have recovered.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control last updated its numbers on May 24, reporting 132 cases in Chesterfield County and 112 in Marlboro County.

Health officials in the Palmetto State estimate there could be hundreds of more people in those counties who are infected but have not yet been tested.
