ROCKINGHAM — Could we see snow in the Sandhills this evening? Possibly, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say that while mostly rain is expected on Friday, the precipitation could turn to snow in the evening.
Counties just to the north — including Moore, Montgomery and Stanly — are currently under a winter weather advisory. Further north, including Randolph, Guilford and Davidson, are under a winter storm warning.
The NWS noon update shows that some areas in the northern half of Richmond County could receive up to an inch and a half of snow.
The potential for snowfall has already resulted in the postponement of Friday night’s basketball games at Pinecrest.
The best chance for snow is between midnight and 3 a.m., according to the local forecast. Less than a half-inch of accumulation is expected in the southern part of the county.
Forecasters warn that near-freezing overnight lows could result in icy patches on roads and bridges.
This would be the first snowfall of the year, but not the first this winter.
Flurries were spotted around the county on Christmas Day.
The weekend looks to be clear and cool, with daytime highs near 50 degrees and overnight lows in the upper 20s, before more rain moves in on Monday.
