Richmond County COVID death count rises to 35

ROCKINGHAM — Two more Richmond County residents who contracted COVID-19 have passed away.

The Richmond County Health Department on Tuesday announced the 34th and 35th COVID-related deaths.

Health and Human Services Director Dr. Tommy Jarrell said his department was notified that one died Saturday — making 14 for October — and the other died Sunday, which is the second for November.

The 33rd death was announced Monday morning. That person also died on Sunday.

According to the Health Department, 25 have passed away in a hospital, seven have died in another healthcare setting and three have died outside of a health setting.

All patients have been between the ages of 31 and 95: 13 have been 80 or older; nine have been in their 60s or 70s; three in their 50s; and one who was 31.

The race and gender breakdown is as follows: four African American females, four African American males, 16 Caucasian females and 11 Caucasian males.

According to the Health Department, women account for 55% of all active cases in the county.

It is not known if any of the patients had underlying conditions.

According to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, there had been 4,390 COVID-related deaths across the state as of noon Nov. 2. Johns Hopkins University reports (as of 11:15 a.m Nov. 3) there have been 231,599 COVID-related deaths in the U.S. and 1,208,455 globally.

The Health Department reported 14 new cases on Monday.

The total number of active cases as of Nov. 2 was 79, with 73 under home isolation and six hospitalized. Both the number of active cases and hospitalizations has decreased in recent days.

Since the first case was reported in April, 1,462 Richmond County residents have tested positive for the coronavirus and 1,350 have recovered. Of all the tests performed, 14,104 have returned a negative result.

Free COVID testing began Monday in the parking lot of Cole Auditorium. Testing will continue through Friday, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. each day.
