Richmond County deputy involved in wreck north of Rockingham

A Richmond County sheriff's deputy was involved in a wreck Tuesday afternoon. The Highway Patrol is investigating.

ROCKINGHAM — A Richmond County sheriff’s deputy was taken to a hospital following a wreck Tuesday afternoon.

According to a press release from Sheriff Mark Gulledge, Deputy M.E. Owens was attempting to cross U.S. 220 from Harrington Road to Billy Covington Road.

As Owens entered the northbound lanes of the highway, his patrol car was reportedly hit by another vehicle. Following the impact, the second vehicle reportedly hit another vehicle that was stationary at the stop sign on Billy Covington Road.

Owens was treated and released from a hospital and the driver of the vehicle that hit him was also sent to a hospital for treatment, but the RCSO provided no details on injuries.

The occupants of the third vehicle were not injured, according to the release.

The wreck is being investigated by the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

The RO contacted the Highway Patrol at 2:42 p.m. and had received no response by 5:10 p.m.
