ROCKINGHAM — Detainees at the Richmond County Jail won’t be able to have visitors for about several days.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, which oversees jail operations, announced Monday that visitations will be suspended April 28-May 2.

According to the post, the jail is upgrading its phone system and installing equipment “to provide video visits for the inmates and their families.”

“Sorry for the inconvenience, but this system will allow more time to visit and also allow those that are unable to travel to still have video visits with their loved one,” the post concludes.

As of 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, 95 people were being held at the jail awaiting court.

Of those, five have been in jail since prior to 2020, all but one on murder charges.
