Richmond County Library System Offers Summer Programs

RICHMOND COUNTY – The Richmond County Library System is offering a variety of activities throughout the summer for children as well as adults to fill up that free time while school is not in session.

“LIBRARIES ROCK!” is the theme for the summer program which will be offered at the Hamlet Public Library, Leath Memorial Library in Rockingham, and Kemp-Sugg Memorial Library in Ellerbe.

The reading program begins at the Hamlet Public Library on June 15th. When you check out five books, you win a prize, and when you check out 10 books, you receive a food coupon.

To log in your reading minutes online, just go to www.srls.info. You are responsible for turning in your reading record by August 2nd, and awards will be presented on August 10th, the final day of the program.

The programs in Hamlet begin on Wednesday, July 11th at 10:00 a.m.  There are three categories:  children, teens, and adults.

Due to limited space, sign-up prior to the programs is required. Activities are outside, so it is suggested you bring a towel to sit on.

1)  July 11-“Panning for Gold”

2)  July 18-“Mad Science” (10 – 10:30 a.m. & 10:45 – 11:15 a.m.)

3)  July 25-“Rocking with the Richmond County Band”

4)  August 2-“Rock Climbing with Ragland and Hamlet Fire Department Demonstrations”

Craft classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. beginning June 26th.

Due to limited space of 25 per class, it is necessary to sign up ahead of time. The same craft activity will be done each week over the six-week span through August 9th.

Some of the craft activities include musical instruments, CD art, rock art, and ornaments.

The Summer Reading Program will draw to a close on Friday, August 10th with a Fun Day and Awards Ceremony. A section of Main Street in Hamlet, from Rice Street to Henderson Street, will be closed to traffic that morning. Outside activities will include a Super Soaker, an obstacle course, a video truck, face painting, Joy the Clown, and even snow cones.

The Hamlet Public Library is part of the Sandhills Regional Library System. It is located at 302 Main Street and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
