HAMLET — Your choice of dinner Saturday evening could help stifle the local unwanted pet population.

Operation Fix will be selling plates for its annual Spayghetti Dinner fundraiser, which collects money to pay for spaying and neutering of cats and dogs, Feb. 24 at American Legion Post 49 in Hamlet.

Formerly Richmond County Animal Advocates, the organization changed its name and mission several years ago to focus on controlling the pet population.

It’s fitting that the event is held during February, which is designated as Spay and Neuter Awareness Month.

According to the Best Friends Animal Society, 569 cats are euthanized each day in animal shelters across the nation.

Last year’s Spayghetti Dinner brought in $3,291, according to founder Allison Story.

Earlier this week, Story posted a plea on social media in an effort to sell more tickets to keep from having to cancel the event.

R.C. Operation Fix is funded solely by donations from the community and fundraisers like the Spayghetti Dinner and last year’s inaugural Paddle for Paws event, which raised $1,347.91 — enough to cover 10 spays for large dogs or 18 spays or neuters for cats.

The organization also received funds from Hamlet’s Walk and Wag.

In December, R.C. Operation Fix was gifted a van — dubbed the “neuter scooter” — by Girffin Dodge to help transport animals to the clinic.

The Spayghetti Dinner has been the group’s main fundraiser since 2014 and last year’s was the first since 2019, before the COVID 19 pandemic.

The $15 meal ticket includes pasta, salad, bread, a drink and dessert. Early bird take-out will be from 5-6 p.m. and dine-in will be from 6-8 p.m.

Tickets are available at Broad Street Pawn and Jewelry in Rockingham or online: https://www.simpletix.com/e/spayghetti-dinner-tickets-158297?#smtx-click

There will also be a raffle and Story said the group is still seeking donations for prizes.
