ROCKINGHAM — Two men are accused of stealing an old store sign and selling it for a tenth of its approximated value.
According to warrants, 18-year-old Elvis Dalton Jones and 22-year-old William Huckabee stole a vintage “Whirlpool Home Appliances Bobby Furn. Inc.” sign and sold it to an Ellerbe consignment shop.
The sign, according to the warrants, is valued at $1,100 but the pair only got $100 for it.
The alleged stealing and selling occurred between May 1 and 13, the warrants state.
They were arrested July 3 and each charged with felony larceny and obtaining property by false pretenses.
Huckabee was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor, for allegedly having a glass pipe and digital scales, according to court documents.
Jones was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $6,000 secured bond, Huckabee under a $10,000 secured bond, but both were released on bail the same day.
However, Jones was back in jail by Tuesday, charged with assault on a female, communicating threats, injury to personal property and injury to real property, records show. All four charges are misdemeanors. Online court records show a second charge of injury to personal property.
He was still in jail Thursday afternoon under a $3,000 secured bond.
Court records show Jones has several other pending misdemeanor charges: two counts of possession of up to a half-ounce of marijuana; simple possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance; and resisting a public officer.
Jones also has pending traffic infractions in Richmond and Columbus counties: two counts of speeding; failing to carry a valid driver’s license; having no operator’s license; driving while impaired; reckless driving with wanton disregard; failing to wear a seat belt as a driver; and use of white or clear lights on rear of vehicle.
Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Huckabee was first convicted in 2017 of misdemeanor larceny. The following year he was convicted on two counts of injury to personal property.
Jones has no prior adult convictions.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
