Richmond County reports 64th COVID-related death, 3rd this week

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Health Department on Wednesday morning announced another COVID-related death, the third in two days.

The unnamed county resident died in a local healthcare facility, according to a press release, making 15 to pass away in that type of setting.

Forty-five patients have died in a hospital and four have died outside of a healthcare setting.

So far, there have been 64 COVID-related deaths from Richmond County since April of 2020 and the 12th of the new year.

The race and gender breakdown is as follows: 11 African American females, eight African American males, one “other race” female, one “other race,” male, one Hispanic female, two American Indian males, 22 Caucasian females and 18 Caucasian males.

All patients have been between the ages of 31 and 95: 20 have been 80 or older; 19 have been in their 70s; 17 in their 60s; seven in their 50s; and one who was 31.

Judging from previous reports, the latest death was that of a Caucasian woman in her 50s.

There have been 8,139 COVID-related deaths across the state as of Jan. 19, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. Wednesday’s statistics have not yet been released.

When compared to other counties with similar populations (43,000-48,000) Richmond ranks second.

DHHS records (which may not be up to date with county records, as only 59 are recorded for Richmond) show the following death totals:

  • Beaufort – 61 (including the mayor of Washington)
  • McDowell – 42
  • Stokes – 45
  • Jackson – 20

There have now been more than 2 million COVID-related deaths worldwide and more than 400,000 in the U.S.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the country has seen 401,820 and there have been 2,060,731 globally.

Michigan, which has a population just less than that of North Carolina, has had 14,735; and Georgia, which also has a comparable population, has had 12,582, according to JHU.

On Tuesday, the Health Department reported that 25 residents were hospitalized with the coronavirus.
