ROCKINGHAM — Members of the Richmond County Rescue Squad have been busy the past two days.

Thursday they were cooking. Friday they were serving.

The squad is having its annual barbecue and chicken plate fundraiser at the base on Rockingham Road.

Volunteer Chief Scott Waters said Friday, while filling plates with barbecue, that they cooked up 1,000 pounds of barbecue and a slew of chicken quarters and that sales would continue throughout the day.

Plates include a choice of chicken or barbecue, cole slaw, baked beans, an oatmeal cream pie and a roll for $8.

The sale is the squad’s largest fundraiser of the year.

All the money raised from the sale will go into the squad’s operating budget to help pay bills and purchase equipment.

The rescue squad gets $12,000 from the county each year, as well as quarterly contributions from the United Way of Richmond County. All other funds are raised by the department.

The squad also sells concessions at the professional wrestling matches hosted at the base, making $200-$300 per event.

The event is typically held the first Friday in May, however last year’s fundraiser was postponed until August.
