ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County “showed up and showed out” for trick-or-treating this year, despite discouragement from local officials.

The city managers of both Rockingham and Hamlet had suggested residents stay home this year because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and many traditional activities were canceled, but some decided to host Halloween happenings anyway.

American Woodmark kicked things off early Thursday with a trunk-or-treat event in its parking lot.

“American Woodmark Hamlet Plant cannot expect to be successful unless our community continues to thrive,” said Bob Young, director of manufacturing. “We know as corporate citizens we must take an active role to improve the environment and create opportunities. Not just with jobs but also with fun that extends beyond our employees.

“We can’t just put American Woodmark’s goals above the community. We are committed to bring much more than that. We want the community to benefit from our presence.”

Many yards across the county were decorated for Halloween, including that of Rockingham City Councilman John Hutchinson.

On Saturday, several neighborhoods stepped up the spook factor from Hylan Avenue in Hamlet, to The Skyline Horror and Lakestone Haunted Trail in Rockingham and a Haunted Driveway in Cordova.

Events were announced in the Facebook group Richmond Country trick or treating 2020, and judging by the comments, they were successful.

Parents thanked those who put in the effort to keep traditions going and organizers thanked all those who came out.

Anthony Bristow said more than 400 trick-or-treaters came out to the Skyline Horror.

Several churches, including Maple Street Freewill Baptist and Freedom Baptist also passed out candy.

“Richmond County showed up and showed out!” posted Ciera Lee, who created the group. “Thanks to everyone giving out candy who made this night worth it for our kids!”
