Richmond County Schools cancels field trips due to coronavirus

HAMLET — Students in Richmond County won’t be leaving the area on any field trips anytime soon.

Richmond County Schools announced Wednesday afternoon — a day after Gov. Roy Cooper issued a State of Emergency due to the coronavirus — that all out-of-state and out-of-district trips and travel have been cancelled for students and staff.

Travel for students and staff for in-state sports competitions will continue, however, under the guidance of the North Carolina High School Athletics Association, according to Public Information Officer Jasmine Hagar.

On-campus events will be left at each principal’s discretion.

Hagar said the district will “continue to monitor and update district-level events that may be impacted.”

“We will continue to remind our school community that the best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are the same preventions that are recommended for the spread of the flu and the common cold,” Hagar said. “We encourage students, staff and school visitors to follow proper handwashing and sanitation practices to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses.”
