Richmond County Schools Cancels Thursday Classes, Sports; Community College Still a Go

HAMLET— Richmond County students will miss yet another day due a hurricane.

The school district announced on its Facebook page Wednesday afternoon that there would be no classes or athletics on Thursday, when Hurricane Michael — currently expected to be a tropical storm by then — makes its way through the Carolinas.

While a message will be sent out at 5 p.m. Thursday regarding classes on Friday, Homecoming activities are still on track.

A line of showers not associated with the hurricane moving through the county on Wednesday resulted in the postponement of the high school’s soccer match against Lumberton. That match will be played Oct. 29. Thursday’s soccer matchup between the Raiders and the Scots will be Oct. 25.

A tennis match scheduled for Wednesday was cancelled, according to another Facebook post.

Students missed five days of instructional time last month due to Hurricane Florence, according to Superintendent Dr. Cindy Goodman.

Earlier this month, the N.C. General Assembly voted to waive up to 20 days for schools in the 28 counties declared federal disaster areas. Richmond was the westernmost county to be declared a disaster.

As of 3:35 p.m., classes at Richmond Community College were still on as scheduled, according to Wiley Bell, marketing and communications director.

Hurricane Michael made landfall early Wednesday afternoon in the western panhandle of Florida, near Mexico Beach, with top wind speeds of 155 mph.

Richmond County is expected to see sustained winds of 20-30 mph, with gusts nearing 60 mph, along with 4-6 inches of rain on Thursday.
