ROCKINGHAM — Two schools are on lockdown as a homicide investigation is ongoing in the Little Philadelphia community.

Chief Deputy Jay Childers confirmed that the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is on the scene where one person was killed Monday on Patterson Road.

No other details are currently available.

Richmond County Schools Public Information Officer Kylie McDonald said students at both Richmond Senior High and Washington Street Elementary are being sheltered in place out of “an abundance of caution.”

“There’s no immediate threat at either school,” McDonald said. “Sheltered in place simply means that our students must stay inside the building. As always, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority!”

The RO will have more information on this developing story as it is released.
