ROCKINGHAM — A man is charged with breaking into the home of an ex-girlfriend — who reportedly shot at him during the incident.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a call Tuesday afternoon from the 911 Center regarding a possible breaking and entering with shots fired.
When deputies arrived on the scene, the homeowner reportedly told them she was in a bedroom when her ex-boyfriend, 45-year-old Robert Paul Wiggins Jr., of Wiregrass Road, broke into her house and walked into her room.
Investigators say the victim told Wiggins to leave and fired several shots at him. They did not specify if the shots were fired inside or outside the home.
Wiggins, who was not injured, fled the scene was found a short time later by a deputy on U.S. 1, according to the sheriff’s office.
He was arrested and charged with breaking and entering with the intent to terrorize or injure and booked into the Richmond County Jail with a $250,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 4.
Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Wiggins has a violent past.
He is currently on probation after being convicted May 8 of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and assault by strangulation, both felonies.
In 2017, Wiggins was convicted of violating a protective order.
He was first convicted in 1991 on two counts of assault inflicting serious injury. His probation on one of those counts was revoked in 1993, resulting in a six-month incarceration.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
