ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of another scam.

“The sheriff’s office has been made aware of our citizens receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be a deputy sheriff and demanding payment for missed jury duty or fines,” reads a social media post from Wednesday evening.

The sheriff’s office said deputies do not call and ask for fines or fees to be paid over the phone.

One of the numbers reportedly being used is 910-817-3166. While it shows up as a Rockingham telephone number, investigators say it’s computer generated.

“Spoofed calls are when a call appears to be coming from one number, but in reality, is coming from a scammer with a different phone number,” the N.C. Attorney General’s office posted in 2018. ”Your caller ID may say that an incoming call or text is coming from a local phone number, your own number, or the number of someone you know, but it’s a scam call.”

Complaints can be filed with the AG’s office by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or visiting https://ncdoj.gov/file-a-complaint/.
