CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Following the Fall Bocce Games in Rockingham on Wednesday, November 1, Richmond County Special Olympics (RCSO) athletes participated in the State Games in Charlotte, N.C., over the weekend.

Six local athletes have been busy practicing for the past eight weeks preparing for the State Games that were held November 4 and 5. The six athletes that participated in the bocce division were Dawn Grooms (who competed in the single games) and team captain Joy Frye, Shawn Richardson, Nicholas Glaze, Keith Wall, and Justyce Stevenson (all of whom competed in the team games).

Richmond County finished with a gold win for team bocce, and a bronze win for single bocce.

“I am so proud of our athletes and how they represented Richmond County this weekend,” said Theressa Smith, RCSO coordinator. “Not only did they compete well, but they also were very respectful to the officials and other teams. We hope to continue growing our program and be able to participate in other sports at State Games in the near future.”
