ROCKINGHAM — As Richmond County experiences its first significant rainfall in more than three weeks, forecasters are warning of the possibility of flooding.

The National Weather Service recently added Richmond and Anson counties to a flash flood watch that extends up the U.S. 1 corridor and also includes Scotland, Hoke, Lee and parts of Moore and Montgomery counties.

“Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms, some with heavy rain, are expected through tonight,” the watch announcement reads. “One to four inches of rain is possible through tonight. This will lead to the potential for flash flooding.”

According to the NWS: “Low lying areas near creeks, streams, and rivers and locations with poor drainage could become inundated with floodwater and inaccessible. Flooding of roadways and road closures are also possible.”

The watch is set to expire at 6 a.m. Friday.

There is also a chance of thunderstorms both Thursday and Friday, which could produce strong wind gusts.

Thursday’s rains led to the cancellation of Plaza Jam in Rockingham.

The weekend appears mostly clear, with a 20% chance of storms on Saturday.
