RO ELECTION COVERAGE: Municipal Elections Just Around the Corner; What You Need to Know

RICHMOND COUNTY – With only one week left until Election Day 2017, it’s been relatively quiet on the political front in Richmond County this election season.

In the mayoral races in Rockingham, Hamlet, Hoffman and Ellerbe the four incumbents Steve Morris (Rockingham), Bill Bayless (Hamlet), Tommy Hart (Hoffman) and Lee Berry (Ellerbe) are all running unopposed.

As for the council seats in Ellerbe, where the four-year terms are staggered, there are three incumbents and two newcomers running for the three available seats seats.  The incumbents are Corey Brewington, Jean C. Fletcher, and Archie Robinson.  They are being opposed by Fred Cloninger and Lee Freeman.

In Hamlet, incumbents Eddie Martin and Jesse McQueen face opponents Stephanie Dixon and Jerry Dean Lamont.

Hoffman, where all seats run for re-election every two years, has four incumbents: Riccardo Anderson, Rory Kevin Jones, Daniel Kelly, and Cynthia A. Northcutt. There is also a new challenger running for town council in John D. Taylor.

Rockingham City Council has three seats up for re-election this year, but all three incumbents (Anne Edwards, Denise Sullivan and Gene Willard) are running unopposed.  In the Rockingham race, however, there is still something at stake.

Rockingham Council is set up on a staggered system of three council seats running each election cycle.  The two persons receiving the most votes gain four year terms, whereas the person with the least votes must run again in two years.
