ROCKINGHAM — A veteran fireman is being awarded for his role in saving a woman’s life earlier this year.

Rockingham City Manager Monty Crump announced Tuesday evening that Vernon McKinnon, assistant chief of the Rockingham Fire Department, will be receiving the Medal of Valor next month “in recognition of an act of outstanding bravery.”

According to a post on the department’s Facebook page, McKinnon was off duty on June 18 when he heard a cry for help while walking out of Walmart.

McKinnon reportedly went over to the call to find a woman lying on the ground and found she had no pulse and was not breathing. He then called 911 and began CPR.

By the time the EMS unit arrived, the post continues, the patient’s pulse had returned and she was breathing again.

“According to the family, doctors credit Chief McKinnon for his quick response and effective CPR for the positive outcome,” the post reads.

On June 23, the family visited the department to thank McKinnon.

McKinnon has been with the department since 1988.

Chief Harold Isler said the medal will be presented at the department’s Christmas party in December.
