ROCKINGHAM — A woman accused of breaking into a vehicle and using the victim’s financial card for several purchases was arrested last week in Raleigh.

Sumer Paige Turner, 26, of Hylan Avenue, allegedly broke into a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Foushee Street on Sept. 18, stealing a Louis Vuitton purse, Tory Burch wallet, sunglasses, $500 in cash, assorted gift cards and $150 in makeup items.

According to warrants, Turner conspired with 26-year-old Laquanich Shawnquaile Byrd, of Mizpah Road, to use the victim’s financial card and personal information to make several purchases.

On Sept. 19, Turner twice bought shoes from Hibbett Sports and later obtained unspecified “goods and services” from Walmart, according to warrants.

Turner also allegedly attempted to buy shoes from Foot Locker.

As previously reported, Byrd allegedly used the stolen card to obtain two cellphones and two phone cards from Walmart.

Byrd was arrested Sept. 23 and charged with charged with two felony counts each of identity theft and obtaining property by false pretenses and one count of felony conspiracy.

She was released on a $25,000 unsecured bond and had a court appearance Oct. 3. Her next court date is scheduled for Nov. 14.

A warrant for Turner’s arrest was issued Sept. 26 and she was arrested by officers with the Raleigh Police Department on Oct. 1. Initially, Turner was booked into the Wake County Detention Center, but was transferred to the Richmond County Jail at 4:56 p.m. Oct. 4, records show.

Turner is charged with: five counts of identity theft; four counts of obtaining property by false pretenses; and one count each of felony conspiracy, breaking or entering a motor vehicle, larceny after breaking and entering, and attempting to obtain property by false pretenses.

Turner is being held under a $100,000 secured bond and was ordered not to have contact with Byrd. She is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 24.

Online records show Turner has no other pending charges or prior convictions in North Carolina.

Byrd also has an appearance scheduled for Nov. 6 on charges from the N.C. State Highway Patrol for driving with a revoked license and having an open container or consuming alcohol in the passenger area, records show.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety, which have her listed as “Laquanica Shawnquail” Byrd, show she was given a 12-month suspended sentence in June following a conviction on a school attendance law violation.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
