Rockingham man accused of shooting into SUV, trying to kill 5 people

ELLERBE — A Rockingham man is accused of shooting into a vehicle with two adults and a juvenile late last month.

According to warrants, Brandon Lee Cox, 22, of Robinson Street, fired a .22-caliber handgun into the driver’s side window of a Chevrolet Blazer occupied by three people on Hudson Drive in Ellerbe on Aug. 23. One of the occupants was 12 years old.

Cox is also accused of shooting at two other people, including a 17-year-old, who weren’t listed as occupants of the vehicle.

He was arrested Wednesday and charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and one count each of discharging a weapon into an occupied property and injury to personal property.

Cox was booked into the Richmond County Jail where he is being held under a $250,000 secured bond.

Online court records show Cox also has multiple pending charges from the Rockingham Police Department: possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver heroin; selling or delivering heroin; maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance; and resisting a public officer.

He also has a number of traffic infractions from the RPD, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, N.C. State Highway Patrol and a police department in Moore County including five counts of driving with a revoked license; four counts each of operating a vehicle with no insurance and having an expired or no inspection; and one count each of having an open container (of alcohol) in the passenger area and having no operator’s license.

Cox has court appearances scheduled for Sept. 11, 12, 19 and 20 and one on Nov. 6.

Online records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show no prior convictions.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
