Rockingham man accused of stealing tax refund at gunpoint

ROCKINGHAM — A man is facing several criminal charges after allegedly robbing his girlfriend of her tax refund.

According to a report from the Rockingham Police Department, an officer responded to a call in reference to a robbery on Biltmore Drive on Feb. 27.

The victim told the officer that her boyfriend had pointed a gun at her and her child before taking the money and leaving before police arrived, according to the report.

A few hours later, officers located and arrested 31-year-old Antion Lee Sowell, of the same address.

He is charged with two misdemeanor counts of assault by pointing a gun and one felony count each of larceny and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Sowell was booked into the Richmond County Jail where he remained Friday evening under a $200,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court March 9.

Online court records show Sowell has a pending traffic violation for driving with a revoked license.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Sowell was convicted of felony breaking and entering in 2009 and misdemeanor larceny in 2004.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Police are also investigating another reported tax-refund theft.

According to a report filed March 2, the victim, who was at the Sunset Motel, told police that a man was going to give her a ride but drove off with her belongings which included her tax refund, an Aeropostale bag, a food stamp card, Medicaid card and a bank card.

That case is still under investigation.
