ROCKINGHAM — A man was booked into the Richmond County Jail early Monday, to be picked up by U.S. Marshals.
Jail records show 41-year-old Jerome Stanback, of Rockingham, was admitted at 11:04 a.m. on a federal hold.
According to a federal indictment filed May 1, Stanback, a convicted felon, was in possession of a DPMS .223-caliber rifle and a Smith & Wesson .45-caliber handgun in Richmond County on or about Jan. 10.
There are not yet any details on his pending appearance in federal court.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Stanback has numerous felonies dating back more than 20 years.
In 1997, he was convicted of breaking and entering in Montgomery County and was incarcerated for nearly seven months.
He was convicted several times throughout 2001 of breaking and entering, being a spectator of animal fights, possessing stolen goods, assault inflicting serious injury and driving with a revoked license.
Stanback was initially given probation for those convictions, which was revoked in December of that year, resulting in an eight-month sentence.
He was convicted in 2003 in Stanly County of possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance and attempted possession of stolen goods.
He was later convicted back in Montgomery County of assault on a female in 2007, and possession of a firearm by a felon and delivering or selling a Schedule II controlled substance in 2008.
His probation on those charges was revoked in neighboring Randolph County and he was sent back to prison from March 2009 to June 2010, records show.
His most recent conviction was in 2017 of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance in Montgomery County, where he was given a suspended sentence.
