Rockingham officers find man with stolen gun, drugs

Richmond County Jail

ROCKINGHAM — Police say they found drugs on a man who walked into a gas station with a gun on his person last week.

According to warrants, two Rockingham Police officers were “investigating a subject” who walked into Alco No. 12 on May 2 with a firearm tucked into his waistband.

When officers detained 41-year-old Eric Dwayne Lennon, they allege that he tried to pull away from them and reach for his handgun.

Officers discovered that the Taurus 9mm was stolen and also found 42 baggies of crack cocaine (9.3 grams) and three baggies of marijuana (2.8 grams), according to warrants.

Lennon was arrested and charged with: possession of a stolen firearm; possession of a firearm by a felon; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule VI controlled substance; carrying a concealed weapon; and two counts of resisting a public officer.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond.

Lennon has an additional $5,000 secured bond for four charges of failing to appear in court in Stanly County. Online court records show he has four pending traffic infractions there.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Lennon was most recently convicted in 2011 for driving with a revoked license.

His first conviction was in 1995 for assault with intent to inflict serious injury.

Two years later he was convicted of robbery with a dangerous weapon and incarcerated for nearly six years.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
