ROCKINGHAM — Police say a pit bull had to be put down early Tuesday after getting into a fight with another dog and attacking people.

Officers with the Rockingham Police Department responded to a home on Roberdel Road to a call about two pit bulls fighting, according to Chief George Gillenwater.

The chief said one of the dogs belonged to the residents of the home and the family was keeping the other, adding that the two did not get along.

The dogs were reportedly fighting outside and attacked one of the residents who tried to break up the fight. One of the dogs also reportedly attacked the responding officers.

Gillenwater said the surviving dog was in “bad shape” and taken to the Richmond County Animal Shelter.
