Rockingham Police: Unattended child found, now in care of DSS

ROCKINGHAM — Police say a small child is in government custody after being found alone.

Detective Lt. George Gillenwater of the Rockingham Police Department told the RO that officers found a 3-year-old unattended near Thomas Street on Saturday.

Threresa Thompson Knox posted in the Facebook group What’s Up Richmond County that police were going door to door looking for the family.

“The child seemed content with (the) police lady that was holding him,” she said.

Gillenwater said the Richmond County Department of Social Services was contacted and the child was placed with the agency.

The parents were eventually located and the incident is being investigated, he said, adding that the possibility of charges is being discussed.
