ROCKINGHAM — A local organization is collecting items to send care packages to troops serving overseas.
The Rockingham VFW Post 4203 Auxiliary posted on its Facebook page Friday afternoon that it would be using the money raised from November’s Rockin’ for Veterans concert to provide the packages.
Auxiliary members also encourage Richmond County residents to help out.
The Facebook post featured a list of items — both for food and for fun — to be included in the packages.
Foodstuffs include: tuna salad lunch kits; ramen noodles and canned soups and pastas; canned sardines, oysters and clams; chips and crackers; trail mix and power bars; cookies, candy bars and gum; as well as drink mixes (tea, coffee, hot cocoa, etc.)
To help the troops have a little fun while deployed, the Auxiliary is also collecting: computer games; audio CDs; decks of playing cards; frisbees, foam footballs and hacky sack footbags.
Drop-off boxes are set up at the VFW for donations.
Auxiliary President Robin Roberts said the packages will be mailed out on Feb. 11.
In 2017, the second year of the annual concert, the Auxiliary raised $1,800 to provide care packages to the 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron.
