ROCKINGHAM — The tone for VFW Post 4203 Auxiliary’s annual concert fundraiser will be lowered a little this year.

The organization on Monday announced “Shagging For Our Soldiers,” scheduled for Sept. 16 at the post in Rockingham.

Auxiliary President Robin Roberts said some of the veterans had requested a “shag band,” so, with her contacts through booking bands at Hudson Brothers Deli, Roberts decided on a slightly different lineup.

Playing this year will be local singer/songwriter/guitarslinger Jonathan Robinson and Beach Fever Band, featuring members from Richmond and Scotland counties.

This will be Robinson’s fifth performance in the event, having played Rockin’ for Veterans in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022.

Robinson’s band features drummer Rob Dufresne, who served in the U.S. Army as a Green Beret, and Joe Felice on bass.

The Beach Fever Band has been performing across the region for the past two years, with their first show at the Berry Patch in March of 2021.

The Beach Fever lineup includes bassist Gary Raines and guitarist Carl Giddens, both of Rockingam; Kevin Parrish of Hamlet on vocals, saxaphone and guitar; drummer NiQuan Sims of Maxton; and Zachary Kendall on vocals, keyboard, trumpet, trombone — and occasionally guitar and drums.

Rockin’ for Veterans began in 2016 as a fundraiser by the VFW Auxiliary, with proceeds going to provide care packages to local service members stationed overseas.

The show was canceled in 2020 due to government restrictions in response to the COVID pandemic.

Roberts said the Auxiliary is planning to hold Rockin’ for Veterans in April, with a lineup of local heavy hitters.
